The Landmark/Wonder/Monument Thread

Post by Paco the Great on Sat 2 Jul 2011 - 21:04

Post your favourite landmarks from around the world!

I like the Tre Monti in San Marino. I've never been there, though.

Taj Mahaal is pretty. (Not been there, either)

And St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Been there.

And Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia. Been there.

And Santiago's Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia. Been there.

Blah Blah Blah Blah.

Monumen Nasional - Jakarta

Borobudur Temple - Yogyakarta

Prambanan Temple - Yogyakarta

Not yet:

St. Peter Basilica - Vatican

St. Basil Cathedral - St. Petersburg

Gyeongbokgung - Seoul

Eiffel, Notre Dame - Paris

Parliament, Buckingham - London

Any monument in Washington D.C. and New York

Ericsson Globe looks nice, but the Washington Memorial site is awesome as well.

The Borobudur is indeed a magnificent piece of architecture, I can't argue with that. A list of mine, where I've probably forgotten half of them:

UK (accidentally all London): St. Paul's Cathedral, Westminster Abbey, Houses of Parliament, the Gerkhin (30 St. Mary Axe or the Swiss Re building, whatever you want to call it), Wembley (yes, football stadiums can be art), Battersea Power Plant (it just has something special about it, perhaps because it's so downright enormous), British Museum, Trafalgar Square, and the list could go on.

Italy: Colloseum (Rome, because it would be impossible to not name it here), Campanile di San Marco (Venice), basically the entire old city of San Gimignano, Milan Cathedral, Il Duomo (Florence), Pallazo Vecchio (Florence), Trajan's Market (Rome).

France: Grande Arche de la Défense (Paris), the Louvre (Paris, I don't generally like French Neoclassical architecture, but it sort of works in the Louvre), The entire city of Mont Saint-Michel, that almost intact Roman temple in (I believe) Nice.

Rest of the World (because I stopped being bothered): Burj Khalifa (Dubai), Burj al-Arab (Dubai), Hagia Sophia (Istanbul), Topkapi Palace (Istanbul), Galata Tower (Istanbul), quite inevitably the Acropolis (Athens), Palacio Real (Madrid), Umayyad Mosque (Damascus), now I've really stopped bothering.

It's in Turkey, and I don't think it's a secret that Turkey is one of my favourite countries in the world, so I just use the Turkish name. But hey, if there's a thread to be done on the Greco-Turkish conflicts, please open it.

Because I currently can't increase your karma at WotTA I just increased your reputation here, which seems like a fine temporary measure until the karma thing works again.

I also like Brighton Pavilion but it's not as good as they make it out to be.

The Scottish Parliament is nice, and Edinburgh Castle is cool too.

Faro Cathedral is quite pretty, with storks for added effect.

The West Pier in Brighton is a quite cool burnt down wreck of a pier now unconnected to the beach.

I also want to go to Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and Suleimaniyya Mosque in Constantinople/Istanbul.

Segura de la Sierra is an awesome castle in Jaen, Spain, with a great museum.

A bit off-topic: How can I see who increased my reputation, and for which post?

You can't see who increased/lowered your reputation, but you can search all your posts and look which have green/red bar in right side of post. grinning

Christos, you saying about how you'd go madly patriotic gave me an idea: The Patriotism Thread! I'll have to wait for Dude to delete one of the others though, or he'll delete it.
